5 Ways to Beat the Heat in Natchez

When the sun’s blazing and the Mississippi humidity starts doing its thing, Natchez has you covered—literally. Whether you’re looking for lazy ways to spend the day, ducking into

galleries, or shopping for your new favorite finds, there are plenty of cool ways (pun intended) to explore our historic river town. Here are five chill ideas for making the most of your visit—even when the temperatures soar.

1. Start Cool at the Depot
Before you dive into the day, make your first stop Visit Natchez at the Depot, our beautifully restored visitor center. It’s not just a place to pick up maps and brochures—it’s an air-conditioned escape with friendly faces ready to help you plan your perfect (and cool) Natchez adventure. Plus, it’s a great selfie spot with a dose of historic charm.

2. Explore History Indoors
Natchez has no shortage of incredible stories, and many of them are told in the sweet, sweet relief of air-conditioning. Step into the cool indoors and explore in a whole new light at the Natchez in Historic Photographs gallery. Tucked upstairs inside First Presbyterian Church, this exhibit offers a captivating escape from the heat, with stunning images of riverboats, cotton trade, and daily life from the 1800s to early 1900s. It’s free to visit, and a perfect way to cool down while soaking up the city.

Next, stop by Big Muddy Inn and Blues Room to check out their special music performances. Or step back in time at Dr. John Bowman Bank House or Choctaw Hall for old-school architecture and rich history. Perhaps take a guided tour through one of our many historic homes and museums where the buildings feel timeless and the interiors are blissfully climate-controlled.

3. Sip and Chill
Looking to stay refreshed and refueled? Grab an iced coffee from Steampunk Coffee Roasters to keep you cool and caffeinated. Looking to snag a sweeter sip? Check out the Malt Shop and indulge in a classic creamy treat all ages can enjoy.

For a more elevated way to explore the cocktail and culinary scene, grab a refreshing spirit from locally loved restaurants like Castle Restaurant and Pub and Rolling River Reloaded—perfect for an evening with friends or a relaxing date night.

And for anyone in need of a mid-day pick-me-up to cool down, you can always get a soda to go from one of our many downtown options and savor it under the shady trees of Bluff Park, which comes complete with towering trees and a view of the Mississippi River.

4. Shop in the Shade
And speaking of downtown, beat the heat by browsing through Natchez’s charming downtown shops, art galleries, and signature stores. Not only will you uncover one-of-a-kind treasures, but you’ll also enjoy a cool break from the sun in beautifully restored buildings. Bonus: Many of our shops are housed in historic structures, so it’s like a mini museum tour with better souvenirs!

5. Explore Natchez State Park
Ready to cast a line and reel in memories you won’t forget? Just a few miles north of Natchez, Natchez State Park is a favorite fishing spot for families, and home to the biggest largemouth bass ever caught in Mississippi (a whopping 18.15 pounds!). The lake is stocked with catfish, bream, and Florida bass, and there’s a boat launch if you’re bringing your own. Just don’t forget your Mississippi fishing license if you’re between 16 and 65!

Stay Cool, Stay Curious
Natchez knows how to keep it cool, even in the dog days of summer. From shaded spots to indoor gems, there’s always a refreshing way to enjoy our Southern hospitality. So grab your sunglasses, make a pit stop at the Depot, and discover a city where the past is preserved—and the present is perfectly chilled.
