Unveiling of the Rosenwald Schools of Adams County Historical Marker

10 Homochitto Street
Natchez MS, 39120

Date:  November 20, 2025

Time:  3:00 pm

A new historical marker recognizing the significant educational legacy of the Rosenwald Schools of Adams County will be officially unveiled on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., at 10 Homochitto Street, Natchez, MS 39120.

The marker dedication is being led by Jerry Klinger of the  Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation, in partnership with the Natchez Museum of African American Culture and Regions Bank, whose support made this commemoration possible.

From the early 1900s through the 1930s, Rosenwald Schools—funded through a visionary collaboration between educator Booker T. Washington and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald—played a transformative role in expanding educational access for African American children across the South. Adams County was home to several of these schools, which provided vital opportunities at a time of profound inequality.

“This marker ensures that the achievements, struggles, and aspirations embodied by the Rosenwald Schools will not be forgotten,” said Jerry Klinger. “Their impact on the families and communities of Adams County continues to resonate today.”

The public is invited to attend the unveiling ceremony, which will include remarks from local leaders, historical reflections, and recognition of those who have worked to preserve this important chapter of Adams County Mississippi’s history.

About the Rosenwald Schools

Between 1912 and 1932, nearly 5,000 Rosenwald Schools were constructed across the American South, representing one of the most significant philanthropic investments in Black education in U.S. history. These schools served as anchors of learning, community, and progress for generations.
